So on Monday, Stefano Pilati (head designer at Yves Saint Laurent) was at Barney's New York to launch the New Vintage collection, exclusive to Barney's. I knew this, yet for some unknown reason, it slipped my mind and I missed my chance to catch a glimpse of the designer.
I really need to start doing some brain exercises or something...
The capsule collection is made from a recycled cotton drill from the YSL archives. New Vintage is a twist to the whole eco friendly movement. Julie Gilhart, Barney's senior vice president and fashion director, encouraged Pilati to do this collection.
“He came up with the idea of going into the archive, and looking into the fabrics and reusing them.” -Gilhart
Gilhart is somewhat of a pioneer when it comes to being green in the luxury retail department so it's only fitting that the two do something like this.
Pilati and Gilhart
The New Vintage collection consists of about 60 pieces and is priced between $500 to $2,400. The fabric used for this collection isn't from the time of the late Saint Laurent, but from the past ten years- from the Tom Ford era to Pilati. Each piece features a special New Vintage label and is numbered. Exclusive, n'est pas?
From WWD:
Pilati had articulated his aim prior to the event in a “manifesto,” calling New Vintage “a general attempt to give a sensibility and an education to our public so that it can act consciously toward its environment,” and a way to “start a dialogue with the market using known codes and a common language that are reassuring and familiar.”
“New Vintage is my way to reflect our social and economic state by capitalizing on existing resources to translate sustainable ‘values’ into ‘forms,’” he added (Source)
This also speaks to what Pilati calls the “merciless speed of fast fashion”. The fact that we no longer get excited about the clothes in the sense of tradition and real skill. Instead we get sucked into the trends du jour and the marketing that all else is overlooked.
