MissWYA Interviews: Dani Wagener, Makeup Artist Extraordinaire

To say I'm a little bit obsessed with beauty is kind of an understatement. I cannot walk past a Sephora without wandering in, only to get lost within the aisles and undoubtedly walk out with something in hand. A small conquest, if you will. But more than makeup there is a job that interests me like none other- the makeup artist. These are the people behind the scenes making sure every lash is in order and there's not a bleeding lipstick situation. They take celebs, brides, you and me from the ordinary to the extraordinary. Often they move so fast you don't know when and what they applied in the crease, outer V and inner corner of the eyes...all you're left with is the perfect smokey eye.

One of theses artists, and indeed they are artists, is Dani Wagener. We became friends through Twitter, where she called me funny. Flatter my ego and I'll love you forever, ha! She's been recognized by Boston Magazine and Allure for her work and is currently, an Atelier Artist for shu uemura. After stalking her website, I finally decided that it was time for everyone to know of her unbelievable talent and skill. So without further adieu...

The artist...Dani Wagener

MissWhoeverYouAre: Tell me a little about your background and your time at shu uemura.
Dani Wagener: I've been working as an artist since I was 19. I started out working for MAC part-time in college. I was never a really great salesperson but loved teaching people how to do their makeup! I just kept going and have since worked for NARS, Estée Lauder, and shu [uemura].

MissWYA: Describe your earliest beauty experience/ memory?
DW: Every year I would get the "Blockbuster" kit from Estée Lauder... that was always first on my list! I would use that for months! I actually wasn't allowed to wear any makeup, so I was always creating colors and blending! So even though I didn't think as a kid that I would be a makeup artist, I LOVED creating products and still my ultimate goal would be to have my own line.

MissWYA: What keywords can be used to describe your quintessential beauty style: the inspirations, moods, and muses?
DW: It's hard to limit my beauty style to just a few words. I like to think the looks that I create will make you look twice. They are classic, yet dramatic (I'm known for using lashes to dramatize a look), perfectly blended, and compliment my client's features.

MissWYA: How has your aesthetic vision evolved since you've started in the industry?
DW: My vision is constantly evolving because I'm always learning new techniques and testing new products, which spark ideas and inspire me. But, there's one thing that has always remained a constant- my obsession with flawless skin. Perfect skin completes any look or vision.

Makeup by Dani Wagener www.daniwagener.com

MissWYA: Favorite city to work in so far?
DW: Boston is my city. It's rich with culture, the people are fabulous. Love it.

MissWYA: What are some of your all time favorite beauty products?
DW: Scott Barnes Chic Palette in Sundance, Brandywine; shu uemura Nobara Cream Foundation; Estée Lauder Amber Bronze Collection; NARS Lip Lacquer; Kiehl's Imperial Body Balm; shu uemura Pressed Eye shadows; Giorgio Armani Designer Foundation

MissWYA: Any must haves for your makeup kit?
DW: Temptu S/B Foundation, shu uemura Cleansing Oil, Clé de Peau Beaute concealer in Ocher and Ivory, Japonesque Brow Groomer/Scissor, Lashes, lashes, lashes!

MissWYA: What is your personal makeup routine?
DW: Tarte Bronzer Park Avenue Princess, MAC Lipglass Florabundance, NARS Turkish Delight, Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer 3 & 10, shu uemura Phtyo Black Cream, La Prairie Cellular Eye Cream, and MAC Cremeblush in Lady Blush.

MissWYA: How would you describe your personal style?
DW: Not too girly believe it or not. Glamorous but classy.

MissWYA: Are there any makeup artists who inspire you or that you look up to?
DW: Stephane Marais, Shu uemura, and Kevyn Aucoin (pictured left)

MissWYA: What is the best advice you've received and from whom?
DW: I can't say that one person ever gave me the best advice I've ever heard. I've had so many creative influences during my career. The key is to never stop listening and learning.

MissWYA: What was the most valuable lesson you learned while at shu uemura?
DW: So many things I've learned. Shu was such a positive person, open-minded person; I try to incorporate his positive outlook into my daily life. He's such an inspiration.

MissWYA: Favorite spring trend?
DW: I love the pop of color and shine that spring pastels bring.

MissWYA: A few of my readers are current or aspiring makeup artists. Any tips or advice you can share with them?
DW: Start small and be patient. Do everyone and anyone's makeup. Do your neighbors' makeup, your friends' makeup, your college dorm mates- anyone who will let you! Word will spread on its own. Also, leave your ego behind. It can be your worst enemy.

Winter Weather Faux Pas: Fix Dry, Brittle Nails

A couple of days ago on a particularly uneventful subway ride home, my best friend and I lamented over the dry air and unbelievably cold weather that NYC is throwing our way. What's the one problem bugging said bff?? The fact that her nails were dry and brittle and any (and all) nail polish she wears cracks within a day of wear.

Now this is something she can't handle. She owns well over 30 bottles of nail polish, each in a strikingly bright shade, and the inability to wear them has caused mass panic and hysteria. As the best friend, I'm mostly the one hearing her sad cries. It wasn't 'till I learned that said friend DOES NOT use a top or base coat that I lost every ounce of pity and rolled my eyes at her situation. Well, duh?!!

She fears spending money on a clear bottle of something that might probably disappoint her, and I don't blame her skepticism. What would I recommend at a time like this? A brand known for their deep commitment to nail care and has never let me down...CND. I LIVE by my Speedy Top Coat and can't imagine life without it (because of course all life would cease to exist if your favorite something ever ran out...or worst, got discontinued...right?). Here's a regimen that will take care of any nail polish issues albeit polish that chips easily or color that lacks luster. Read on, gals. Take notes.

In dry climates, nails are more likely to become brittle and break. Make sure you take care of your nails and use a base coat that will not only aid in the wear of your nail polish but that can strengthen nails at the same time.

CND's Toughen Up Base Coat works by cross-linking keratin in the natural nail (our nails are made of keratin). Toughen Up is a 3-free base meaning that it is free of Formaldehyde, Toluene or Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), which are some of the most toxic chemicals found in products and can cause cancer, developmental/ reproductive problems and allergies.

This strengthens your natural nails as well as helps prevent surface staining of natural nails.

After applying your color, use Super Shiney Top Coat for high shine and color protection. This product is also 3-free so you know it's safe. Super Shiny gives nails a scratch-resistant shine and seals the color for maximum wear. The UV absorber also guards against fading and discoloration.

Some more winter nail care tips:

  • Wear gloves whenever you're outside-they'll help your skin and nails retain some moisture.
  • Take care of your cuticles! Push them back...DO NOT CUT THEM! After washing your hands, rub an oil, like corn or soy, on your wet skin, then dry off. This seals in moisture thus keeping dry hands at bay. Follow up with your fave moisturizer. I'm lovin' CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion it's cheap (around $13 where you go) yet hydrates like none other.
  • You can also take biotin supplements if you're up to it. I've never done this so I can't vouch for how effective it is. You can also take calcium supllements because without enough calcium your nails get dry and may split.

I'm no doctor so I'd check with one before you go off poppin' pills. ;) Do you have any other winter tips and tricks??

Get The Look: Joan Allen at the 2010 SAG Awards

More SAG Awards updates coming your way! Nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries, for her role in Georgia O’Keefe, Joan Allen walked the red carpet in a dress and necklace combo that had me scratching my head for sure.

But thank goodness her hair was so divine, I was too distracted to pay attention to what was south of her neck.

Sebastian Stylist Design Team member Thomas Dunkin created the actress’ do which was a soft head of cascading waves that gracefully grazed her shoulders. Here's what he did and how he did it::

1. To begin, apply Sebastian Professional Taming Elixir to slightly damp hair
2. Blow-dry hair straight to give the hair a smooth, even base to work on and part slightly to the left of center
3. Once dry, use a ¾-inch curling iron to wave the hair by starting at the nape and taking 2-inch sections of hair and leaving them loose to drop slightly
4. Apply step 3 to whole head except for a 2-inch section around the front to the top of the ear
5. Use a ½-inch curling iron on this remaining section and pin curls back using very small blonde matte bobby pins, continuing into the front for a slightly smaller wave
6. Take random pieces of hair and pin them back, allowing pieces to fall out softly giving a touch of looseness to the hairstyle
7. Finish the look with Sebastian Professional Zero Gravity hairspray to give a gentle but very sufficient hold on the hair

Beauty Breakdown: Marion Cotillard at the 2010 SAG Awards

My girl crush on Marion Cotillard doesn't get any better whenever I see her rock the red carpet every. single. time. She is classy, beautiful and elegant all wrapped in one. At this year's Screen Actors Guild Awards Cotillard wore a draped one shoulder white embellished cocktail dress with floral applique detail by Elie Saab polished off by a clutch by Judith Leiber.

Her hair was done by celebrity stylist Robert Vetica for Moroccanoil. The look was a creative mix of ultra-smooth, shiny texture with a deconstructed, somewhat messy bun. Rich, silky shine and smooth texture was essential to the success of the look, explained Vetica.

"I started by applying Moroccanoil® Treatment on wet hair to give the maximum shine possible and an easy blow-dry. Next, I applied Moroccanoil® Hydrating Cream, for definition and soft hold, and created a low side part. I then pin-curled the sides toward the direction the face, and then pin-curled another section in the back to give hair added movement.

Once the hair was dry, I brushed it out, took the full length of hair and made a ponytail. Next, I wrapped a million dollar emerald and diamond bracelet from Chopard around the base of the ponytail, and pinned it strategically into a messy bun.

I finished the look with a light misting of Moroccanoil® Glimmer Shine Spray to give hair a luminous finish that would last throughout the evening.

Beauty Breakdown: Diane Kruger at the 2010 SAG Awards

SAG winner for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture in "Inglorious Basterds", Diane Kruger, looked quite glamorous in an asymmetrical Jason Wu gown was the inspiration for the soft, romantic side-chignon that celebrity stylist Mark Townsend created for the actress.

"I started by taking a small amount of Moroccanoil® Treatment and finger combed it through Diane's dry hair" explained Townsend. "The original Moroccanoil® is super light-weight and absorbs right in, to give the hair amazing shine without weighing it down.

"I then took 2 inch sections of hair and wrapped them around a 1 and 1/2 inch curling iron to create waves all over the head. Next, I took a small amount of Moroccanoil® Hydrating Styling Cream in my palms and then raked my hands through the hair to break up the waves, eliminate any fly-aways, and give the hair a soft hold. Next, I gathered her hair behind her left ear and loosely braided it, gathering about an inch from the bottom, then looped the end of the braid back up and pinned it behind her left ear.

I finished by giving the style hold with L'Oreal Elnett Extra Strong Hold Hairspray followed by a light misting of Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray.

Moroccanoil is sold in fine salons and spas. For more information about Moroccanoil® check out www.moroccanoil.com

Get the Look: Anna Camp at the 2010 SAG Awards

True Blood’s Anna Camp looked beautiful and effortlessly chic at Saturday’s SAG Awards and TRESemme Celebrity Stylist Mara Roszak, gives us the dish on how to recreate the look:

  1. Apply mousse, such as TRESemme 24 Hour Body Foaming Mousse to damp hair and rough dry.
  2. Set the crown of the head with two large velcro rollers to get added volume, and curl the rest of the hair with a curling iron. The trick is to twist and pull each section at the same time, while leaving the ends outs to keep curls looking natural.
  3. Take out the rollers, and curl using the same technique above. Run a dab of TRESemme Anti-Frizz Secret Smoothing Crème through hair. Leave front sections loose around the face.
  4. Pull hair back at the nape of the neck, twist and pin up in three different sections, creating a tousled look in the back. When pinning, criss cross the pins to keep the look firmly in place, and finish with TRESemme Frizz Shield Finishing Spray for a smooth and shiny style.

The Sundance Report

Now, I'm not at Sundance but I wish I were because the star power in in FULL effect! Fellow beauty blogger and pop culture extraordinare Amber from Beauty Blogging Junkie is attending and her tweet of being thisclose (or something to that effect) to Ben Affleck had my heart beating.

While we may not have been there in person, we can still dish on about the celebs. Here's the rundown::

Makeup artist Jordan Long used Votre Vu Habitude Men's Daily Face Crème SPF 15 on Joseph Gordon Levitt (Hesher) at Sundance this weekend- she said it "hydrated without looking greasy." She also "applied the [Tout Le Monde] antioxidant eye gelee since he had slight puffiness and fatigue and it responded very well."

Votre Vu made another appearance but this time it was with makeup artist Jessica Liparoto, who worked with Adrien Brody (yumm). Says Liparoto, "I had gifted Adrien Brody with the fabulous Votre Vu products. Adrien Brody's skin type would reflect the 'Attentive' line. He's very particular about what he puts on his face and tends to stick to what he knows. I was very impressed with Tragic Magic [Rescue Creme]. It completely balanced him out! I also used [Champagne Kisses] Enhancing Lip Balm on him."

Nexxus Salon Hair Care and celebrity stylist Kevin Mancuso helped kick off BRAVO's third season of “Shear Genius” at Sundance. Celebs (think David Hyde Pierce, Shar Jackson and “Orange County Housewives” regulars Gretchen and Slade) stopped by the Shear Genius Salon and VIP retreat to prep for their premieres. But Kevin and the gang weren't just primping before premieres, there was lots of lovin' going on too! Ellen Stone from Bravo Marketing donated over 10 inches of her hair to Locks of Love.

Hairstylist Stephen Lewis worked on Kate Mara using Leonor Greyl products.

Kate Mara at Sundance
"Kate Mara wanted to wear a hat but I applied some Serum de Soie Sublimateur to her dry hair and worked it in. I then ran a blow dryer through her hair to give it volume and a tussled look. I finished the look with Eclat Naturel on my fingertips and she was ready to go!"

Lewis also used Leonor Greyl on Catherine Keener. Here's what he has to say, "This morning was a very loose look. I like to work with her natural waves. I lightly spritzed the hair with water then applied Serum de Soie Sublimateur and worked it into the hair. Then I dried the hair and applied a small amount of Eclat Naturel on the ends. For the evening, I applied Serum de Soie Sublimateur to her wet hair and then blow-dried it with a large round brush. I then applied Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice to the crown of her head for volume. I finished the look with Eclat Naturel. A little goes a long way and makes the hair look very polished."

Get the Look: Katrina Bowden at the 2010 SAG Awards

Actress Katrina Bowden, who stars in the hit show “30 Rock”, was rocking a fierce sultry look at the 2010 SAG Awards Saturday night and mark celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg gives us the rundown on what she did and how to recreate it.

“I started by prepping Katrina’s face with mark For Goodness Face Antioxidant Skin Moisturizing Lotion and mark Kiss Dry Goodbye Lip Smoother onto her lips. I evened out her complexion with mark Face Xpert Flawless Touch Makeup in Golden then buffed Champagne onto her cheek bones for emphasis. To give her that natural looking rosy glow, I used mark Just Pinched Instant Blush Tint in Peachy, smoothed onto the apples of her cheeks followed by a dash of mark Bronze Pro Bronzing Powder. I finished her face with a final brush of mark Matte-nificent Oil-Absorbing Powder to eliminate any excess shine. I then used mark Jewel Body Cream on any exposed skin to give her body a gorgeous glow.”

“For Katrina’s eyes, I started with mark It Kit (available in February) in Latte and blended into her crease. I then used I-mark Custom Pick Eyeshadow in Corset brushed onto her lid, blending it slightly upwards into the crease and dashed below her bottom lash line. I then used mark Eyemarker Color On Line in Jet and carefully rimmed the top and bottom of her eyes, then used mark On The Edge Hook Up Liquid Eyeliner in Cleo to create a perfect line on the top lid strictly for definition. I finished up her eyes with two coats of mark Scanda-Lash Hook Up Mascara in Blacklash focusing on the corner of her lashes to really draw them out.”

“To keep Katrina’s lips looking subtle and natural, I used mark Dew Drenched Moisturlicious Lip Color in Mist.”

Hold On Baby! Aveda Light Elements Texturizing Creme

Earlier this month, Aveda launched its Light Elements Texturizing Creme ($24.00). This bad boy promises to deliver weightless texture with light hold providing soft movement without the icky crunchy, sticky, or dry feeling.

Oh, and it protects hair from UV damage. Talk about triple threat!

With winter well underway and dryness in the air, it's important to nourish your hair without messing your 'do and the folks at Aveda seem to be onto this.

It contains natural waxes including organic beeswax and pullulan to provide light, flexible, all-day hold. In addition it has plant derived emulsifiers from jojoba and soy create a soft, creamy texture that spreads easily through the hair without visible white residue. The Amur corktree adds moisture to hair and a concoction of gamma oryzanol, derived from rice bran, and sasa veitchii, derived from bamboo, helps protect hair from UV damage.

January Jones at the 67th Annual Golden Globes

So what if the Golden Globes were Sunday night? It's award season and you wwill be seeing updates 'round the clock.

Okay, maybe not 'round the clock but...y'know!

When January Jones hit the red carpet last Sunday, a few people were shocked that she wore a- gasp!- headband on the red carpet. But, I mean, only Betty Draper can do such a thing and still look rather divine while at it!

I found out the who, the waht and the how to recreate this look so listen up! Top celebrity stylist Mark Townsend created the 'do which was inspired by her gorgeous black Lanvin dress.

"As soon as I saw the dress I knew I wanted to put her hair up," said Townsend, "and I think that adding the satin ribbon as a headband gave a classic French twist with a very modern edge."

I started by applying a small amount of Moroccanoil® Treatment to January's damp hair and blow-dried it with a round brush. This unique argan oil-infused formula gives the hair amazing shine and silky finish, an
essential to the look I had in mind.

When the hair was dry, I took a dollop of Moroccanoil® Hydrating Styling Cream into my hands and then finger combed the hair to give a soft hold and add even more shine and leave the hair extremely smooth.

Finally, I gathered the hair into a French twist and secured with about 10 bobby pins. To give her a progressive, chic look I used satin ribbon as a headband."

Turn Heads à la Marion Cotillard

I need to have a serious chat with the folks over at Google because their Spam filtering is kinda bonkers! For some ungodly reason, an email about the gift from God Himself- Moroccanoil- landed in my Spam folder only to be noticed today while I cleaned it out.

THE NERVE!!

For those who are unaware and Moroccanoil is one of the BEST hair care products ever. And I mean EVER!

At this year's Golden Globes turns out Marion Cotillard'stunning look (Dior gown, fab makeup and slight poof) was TO DIE. Her hair was done by none other than master celebrity stylist Robert Vetica who used Moroccanoil products to coif her 'do.

And I'm NOW seeing this?!?! Pair my love of this brand ith my total girl crush on Marion and we've got a situation here!

"I wanted a look that was glamorous, but with an edge," said Vetica, "and was inspired by the rock and roll pompadours of the 50s, strengthened with a sleek, modern French twist.

Since shiny, healthy-looking hair was essential to the look, I first applied argan oil-infused Moroccanoil Treatment® to wet hair, and blow-dried it straight using a diffuser to keep a bit of natural texture.

Then I pin-curled the entire head front to back, so that hair would easily flow back and up into the pompadour shape. After releasing the pin curls, I ran Moroccanoil® Hydrating Styling Cream through the hair with my hands. After brushing back and up, I back combed the top, and pulled the sides back tight, leaving some volume on top.

Next, I twisted the hair into a tight French twist, which was then asymmetrically attached with eye-catching diamond hair clips created by Chopard. I finished the look with a light misting of Moroccanoil® Glimmer Shine Spray to give Marion's hair a beautiful, naturally luminous shine."

Moroccanoil products are sold exclusively in fine salons, so check out http://www.moroccanoil.com/ to find a salon near you.
