For Every Shade of Brown, Welcome Specific Beauty

Hyperpigmentation. Dark spots. Uneven skintone and texture. Acne.

These are a few issues women of color face (see what I did there) on a daily basis. Truth is, any type of skin condition can occur regardless of the pigment of your skin. However, when it comes to African Americans and others with darker complexions there are a few skin care problems that are much more prevalent.

What?

To help us out is Specific Beauty, a brand spankin' new skin care line. Developed by Dr. Heather Woolery-Lloyd, a board certified dermatologist and fellow brown girl, Specific Beauty pays attention to what she calls women with "multi hued skin tones," that is women with a range of tones including tan, olive and brown skin. Over the past ten years, Dr. Woolery Lloyd has focused her research on developing effective treatments for the cosmetic concerns of multi hued skin tones. Her years of research culminated to the creation of Specific Beauty, a range of affordable, skin care products designed for brown skin.

How?
Using breakthrough skin brightening technology, Specific Beauty attempts to even skin tone without hydroquinone (a skin-lightening agent). Instead, the line is formulated with natural ingredients such as Licorice and Ginger Root Extract and doesn't contain fragrance and/or paraben free (both which can irritate skin). Having been using these products for about a week, I wanted to give you guys my preliminary thoughts on the line and if I'm seeing what we all want - results.

Daily Gentle Cleanser
Described as: An ultra gentle cleanser designed to maintain and replenish the skins' natural hydration.
My Thoughts: this cleanser is REALLY gentle. It does not foam up like most products we (or at least I) tend to use on a daily basis, which took some getting used to. The consistency is rather creamy and it applies smoothly on the face. I found that it did not really remove all of my makeup and it normally took 2-3 washes for me to see and feel that everything was completely off. OVerall, not my favorite product.

Exfoliating Cleansing Cloths
Described as: Dual-sided to carefully exfoliate the skin, while providing a deep clean to remove impurities, all without the need to rinse with water.
My thoughts: I LOVE these cloths! After washing with the cleanser, if I felt like my face wasn't fully cleaned, I would simply wipe my face with one cloth and instantly felt better. These are ideal for any night time routine to remove makeup and dirt and it works. One cloth goes a LONG way and it doesn't leave your face feeling sticky, dry or greasy. On one side the cloth are textured beads for exfoliation. On the other side, the cloths are smooth for easy and gentle makeup removal. Fragrance, oil and alcohol free, these cloths contain a blend of aloe, green tea, and Vitamin E to soothe and calm the skin.

Skin Brightening Serum
Described as: a special multi-benefit complex of licorice, antioxidants, retinol and niacinimide - to provide the skin with the ultimate brightening benefits.
My thoughts: I typically stray from anything labeled "brightening." In all honesty, hyperpigmentation isn't one of my major concerns, more like acne and oil! While I've been using this daily right before my moisturizer, I've been known to skip a day or two. As I've only been using this for about a week, I can't say I've noticed a dramatic difference.

Daily Hydrating Lotion SPF 30
Described as: Daily moisturizer that provides broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays with SPF 30.
My thoughts: Super lightweight, I love using this every morning before putting on my makeup. Unlike most lotions with sunscreens, this isn't heavy so your face doesn't feel clogged and trapped underneath a layer of muck. Additionally, it doesn't leave a grey or white cast over your face so if you don't wear makeup on a daily basis (and it's summer, who wants that?!), you're good to jst head out the door asap.

Night Treatment Complex
Described as: Lightweight skin brightening formula that helps improve skin texture while you sleep.
My thoughts: Again, I think Specific Beauty's strength lies in their lotions. This night cream has quickly become one of my favorites. Immediately after using the cleansing cloths (and if I remember to put the brightening serum), I apply about two pumps of the night lotion and head to bed. Non greasy, lightweight and hydrating, I highly recommend this product.

My face feels a great deal smoother and I haven't had any major breakouts yet this week. Since the products are all so gentle, this line seems to be great for those with sensitive skin concerns.Again, I'll be interested to see how my skin looks after two months of testing to really see what the effect is. For those like myself, whose main skin concern tends to be acne, the line also has a Clarifying Wash Acne Treatment which I'm eager to try out.

Now here comes the fun part! Specific Beauty and I have teamed up to give ONE lucky reader/Twitter follower the entire products listed above (minus the acne wash). Follow me on Twitter (click here) or visit http://bit.ly/k3YaNr for the official rules.

Questions to ask yourself: What would life be without Schick® Quattro for Women® TrimStyle™?

Empty. That's what. And hella hairy.

I ponder this just about every time I step into my shower, look down at my legs and shriek in horror. During my commute home, I was shocked to see what was going on with my legs. It was completely gross yet fascinating to see how far I had allowed my legs to go before I calmed down the situation. It was decided that for the good of all those who live and breathe in New York City, that I needed to stop being lazy. (P tothe S, don't act like you've never tried to stretch out how long you shave your legs, cuz I won't take that bullsh*t)

Luckily I leave my Trim Style by Schick Quattro for Women in the bathroom as there is NO time to be wasted when you realize that there's an ish from the waist down. This is an absolute MUST in my books and there's no reason for you NOT to own it. Stop kidding yourself, mmkay. With four-blades, the razor easily glides over legs and removes hair with one quick swipe. Being accident prone, I'm happy to report that I always walk away nick-free and unscathed. On the other end, is a nifty little waterproof trimmer to handle your lady bits until you can get your ass to Completely Bare (or if that's your style, no judging here. This is a place of love).

FYI: going on until July 8, Schick Facebook fans can enter the Dare to Be Spontaneous Katy Perry Getaway Sweepstakes where one lucky gal (or guy) will receive a spontaneous getaway vacation with three friends to an undisclosed, secret location in the United States. The trip will include hotel, airfare, tickets to a Katy Perry concert, and a chance to meet Katy Perry (brand spokesperson) in person! Enter today!

pile it on

Jacket: American Eagle; Blouse and Skirt: Zara; Shoes: ShoeDazzle; Necklaces: Forever 21, JewelMint; Bracelets: Avon, Rebecca Minkoff, Forever 21; Watch: Betsey Johnson

Since I'm quite fickle, I have the hardest time decided what to wear day to day, especially when it comes to accessories. While Chanel may have said to take a piece of jewelry off before you leave the house, I say put it on! I can't imagine leaving my house with less than three bracelets on. CAN YOU EVEN?! What's the point of even putting on jewelry if you're only wearing one bit. *scoffs* The shoes, which I've affectionately dubbed Miami because of their FLAIR and cha-cha-cha-ness, arrived today and I am in absolute LOVE! It's terribly hard to walk in but it's only been about five hours so give me some time. In other words, this outfit was full of win - overly layered or not.

Happy Monday dolls!

it'll come, eventually

Sunglasses: Forever 21; Blouse: Zara; Skirt: Forever 21; Watch:Betsey Johnson; Ring: HS graduation ring; Key necklace: my mom's; Sandals (or as the youngin's call 'em "Jerusalem Cruisers": Forever 21

This post has been sitting in my drafts since earlier this week. I fear I have nothing to say. No wit. No humor. Not a sarcastic remark comes to mind. All I know is I'm damn happy it's Friday. This week seemed endless - waking up everyday asking "is it Friday yet?" only to be reminded that it's not. Disappointment settles.

There's no backstory to how I came to this outfit. I simply had two pieces of clothing I wanted to wear and so it was. The bag, my sweet Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Bag (M.A.B) Mini, has been a little gem on my arm since the sample many weeks ago. It's my trophy, my pièce de résistance of sorts. My love of Rebecca Minkoff handbags and accessories knows no boundaries. Now that I have a full time job and I'm a working woman of the world (!!), my true love has come out in the form of shopping for deliciously crafted handbags and shoes. I've been moaning endlessly to several friends on how I desperately wanted to own several Minkoff bags. I don't know what it is. Perhaps it's the simplicity of their design, the ever present hardware or even the ease in which they fit into your wardrobe. Bright, neutral or an exquisite navy - there's no way you can't work this into an outfit. And by work, I mean Werk (capital dubs totally necessary).

Happy Friday!

Always on my mind...

Denim Jacket: American Eagle (gifted); Dress: Forever 21; Shoes: House of Harlow 1960 (gifted); Bag: Zara; Bangles: Kate Spade; Watch: Betsey Johnson; Neon Bracelets: Rebecca Minkoff; Braided bracelet: Topshop

The bag, dear Lord, the bag. I've had my eye on it for what seems like decades (aka 2-3 months). The price - $109 - always prevented me from purchasing it. I couldn't bring myself to say, Here. Here's my hard earned cash. I convinced myself that the chain strap would make it too hard to carry and thus a waste of money. Until I ran into the uber lovely @Bergdorfs at my homies' #bdaytrifecta (that's birthday party in Twitter speak) last week. There it was - my bag. As she spoke and told me how much it carried without weighing down her shoulders, my mind had been made up. I needed it badly. My mind drifted to the summer outfits, BBQs, and cocktails I'd attend with a brightly colored clutch on my arm. Sure enough my behind walked right into Zara the very next day and forked over my debit card. Fact is, I needed a bright ass orange bag that can carry my life without looking like it's carrying my life. I can continue to make excuses to justify this purchase but I won't. At the end of the day, if you want something you deserve to treat yourself.

Return of the Mack, er, M·A·C Suntints

When M·A·C launched their Suntints liquid lip balms back in '09 with Baby Bloom, I waxed poetic how your needed to snap up every single item in the collection. The Suntints caught my eye as they provide a light wash of color with enough SPF protection to keep your puckers safe from the harsh sun rays.

This year, M·A·C must have been reading my diary as they've brought back three new Suntint lip balms ($15.50) to hydrate your dry summer lips. These are great to grab for on the go coverage without worrying about touching up or being fussy. They come part of the limited edition Surf Baby collection, which draws inspiration from the beaches, the boards and the waves.

Pink Tinge and Lilt of Lily

Great for everyday usage, these will be sure to replace you're chapstick or regular balm. Non-sticky, non-messy and super smooth to apply, count this as a must have for Summer 2011.
Three available shades are:
* Full of Grace: soft sheer rose
* Lilt of Lily: soft creamy pale pink
* Pink Tinge: clean bright yellow pink with gold pearl

The M·A·C Surf Baby collection is available now in stores and online.

New to M·A·C's Permanent Line: Prep + Prime Beauty Balm SPF 35

Released in May, M·A·C Cosmetics has introduced a new product to its Prep + Prime lineup. The Prep + Prime Beauty Balm ($30) is a lightly tinted, almost sheer beige tone, that is said to work on a universal array of complexions. Not only is it a primer for foundation and whatever else you may put on your face, it also acts as a "color perfector" while protecting your skin with UVA/UVB SPF 35/PA +++ defense. Beauty Balm lightly hydrates the skin and blurs out lines and illuminating the skin.

I'm curious to try this out as anything described as "beige" freaks me out and leaves a dark skin sista lookin' pale. While I've yet to test out the line, I'm in no hurry as it's available now in the permanent line at www.maccosmetics.com only (available internationally in July 2011 online only; and in Asia July 2011 at all M·A·C locations, 1.800.588.0070 and www.maccosmetics.com).

You Glow Girl

Rarely do I ever make it out of the office before 6:30pm. Normally my coworkers are dragging me out by the hair as I scream "JUST ONE MORE EMAIL!" When I do leave out of my own free will, I make sure it's worthwhile.

source
A couple of weeks ago, I darted out of the office for a very special date - with a facialist at Haven Spa. I know what you're thinking, "oh gosh, another post about Haven" but I beg you to listen. Yes, it's another post about this little piece off heaven BUT it was an all new experience. New to the salon is Patyka, the Ecocert skin care line known and loved by many. I'm certainly no stranger to the line as I've raved about Patyka's Absolis Spearmint refreshing body wash. I think I cried when that body wash finished.

For serious. Moving on...

The Naturally Radiant facial is your classic facial with an eco twist by using only Ecocert and Organic products. For 60 minutes your face smeared with naturally derived products, fine exfoliants and a gentle extraction session (ya'll know how I feel about extractions). Before I knew it, her voice was drowning out and I was blissfully napping away until I woke up with beautifully glowing skin. I swear I've never seen my face any better - till this day where foundation is rarely used (concealer and powder, et voila!). I'm forever grateful for the way my acne prone skin was treated and ultimately cared for. Prep your skin for summer with an ahh-mazing facial without worrying about whether or not harsh chemicals will irritate your skin.

Haven Spa is located at 150 Mercer St. between Houston and Prince in NYC.
