The Fashion Show: Week 4 recap and Get the Look!

I know, I know, I totally skipped out on the recap for last week, so my apologies. On with the show...

So teams are officially dunzo on The Fashion Show. Thank God. I really want to see what these designers are capable of on their own. In Thursday's episode, the designers were instructed to make an outfit based on a single pair of fabulous shoes of their choice.

Sounds like what I do on a daily basis. Hello, Bravo...I base my outfits on my shoes everyday!

The only difference between them and me (other than the fact that I buy my clothes rather than make 'em) is that I'm picking from my Aldo and Bakers shoes, whereas the designers got to pick from Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin.

Inspiration, for real.

Keith chose a pair of floral and black Valentino wedges to create a pink organza and black, knee-length dress. Daniella used her strappy Alexander McQueen peep-toe heels to help create an edgy, black leather, fitted garment with purple lace at the top.

I would totally rock this dress. Just sayin'...

After the catwalk, the audience picked their top three favorite looks designed- Reco, Daniella and Angel. The guest judge this week was George Malkemus, President of Manolo Blahnik (I die), who loved Reco’s strapless, mini-bubble dress coupled with a pair of fashion-forward, YSL cage boots (probably THE most coveted shoe of the year). So naturally, he won and poor Lidia and Andrew found themselves in the bottom two. Unfortunately, Andrew’s uninspired, A-line silhouette left the judges bored, and he was sent home

Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics

While I was at The Makeup Show NYC, I had the pleasure of meeting Pauline Youngblood Soli, the Founder and President of Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics.

Now, when I hear mineral makeup I normally just roll my eyes and keep it moving. I've never had much success with it because a) the "dark" colors weren't dark enough for my skin tone making me look gray and ashy, and b) the mess that would inevitably ensue after all of my swirling, tapping, and buffing.

So I approached with caution, meaning I had my guard up and was just interested in the pretty lipsticks.

Didn't I tell you they were pretty???

But after speaking to Soli, my curiosity was peaked and I gave in allowing my makeup to get done and test the products.

Originally, Soli started out as a licensed Medical Aesthetician specializing in paramedical treatments. It was here that she was in contact with people with severely traumatized skin- from harsh laser treatments, acne, rosacea, to cosmetic surgeries. It would often take up to six months for the skin to return to normal and Pauline saw a void in the cosmetic options that were available for these patients.

She began working with chemists to develop a suitable option - a cosmetic that would cover raw, inflamed, or discolored skin, but allow it to breathe and heal. This led to her initial work with natural mineral cosmetics.

After developing her first loose mineral foundation (one that provided excellent coverage and a natural appearance while still allowing skin to breathe) that proved successful with patients, Soli decided to make this natural mineral foundation commercially available, and thus Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics was born.

Often at times we may be darker in some areas of the face and lighter in others, so do not be afraid (or get upset) if you have to mix and match your shades.

Mineral Primer
OHMIGOD THIS STUFF IS HEAVEN!!!

Since I have oily skin, I tend to run, fast, from makeup primers. First, the primers feel heavy on my skin and then they normally just end up making my makeup slide off my face- not good at all. This primer does none of that. It's lightweight and translucent blend that works wonders with foundation. My complexion was truly flawless after application and it feels super silky and smooth.

Crushed Mineral Blush (this is in Cabernet)

The color adds a nice *pop* to the cheeks. This shade is something amazing. That's all.

Natural Mineral Foundation (my shade is Hazelnut)

I could wax poetic about this foundation from dusk 'till dawn, but because this has already been a long blog post, I'll spare you. I will, however, let you know that this is lightweight and silky. It's sheer enough to not clog your pores but provides that full coverage I love and adore (it's buildable so you actually dictate how much or little foundation you have on).

After that badly needed four day weekend, life gets back to us and we realize that not all is BBQ's and picnics.

Zoë Saldaña For Latina Magazine June/July 2009 Issue

I'm the ever consummate magazine lover. It's true. I'll read a magazine no matter what. But when it comes to my monthly must reads, I'd consider Latina magazine to be one of those.

I'm half Hispanic (Dominican) and half black (Haitian), however, I'm not close to anybody in my Hispanic side of my family (the family had a falling out). Being an Afro-Latina it's really hard sometimes, I feel, because society tries to make you pick one or the other-you're either Black or Hispanic (I always say black since, again, I'm not close to my Hispanic side).

That, however, doesn't stop me from embracing the culture and trying to learn as much as possible. I think Latina sort of fills that void. Every time I read it, I learn something new. And brush up on my Spanish (if you speak really slow...I can understand you haha. I can read it very well though).

Lately, Latina has been diversifying its cover subjects and included more Afro-Latinas in the mix. Holla!!!! Sessilee Lopez graced the March 2009 cover and I nearly died.

Now my fellow Dominicana, Zoë Saldaña, graces the June/ July cover. Saldaña stars in the new Star Trek movie, her future Oscar, and the perfect Saturday night...
