motions #curly2straight

Thursday, April 25, 2013

Last weekend, I made my usual trip to the hair salon armed with a few new products to test out. Having cut my hair short (and then shorter on Monday!) I’m faced with the issue of constant new growth. Now that my hair is at its healthiest, it’s been growing faster than ever (yay?!) but the way it’s cut now means some parts of my hair are consists of growth while the rest remains a bit relaxed. Now’s the time for me to grow it completely natural (constant battle) and the latest products I’m testing can help me solve my dilemma and aid in the #healthyhair quest.

motions straight finish

One in four African American women with natural hair would like to straight style their hair, but only if their curl pattern would not be compromised*. Motions® new 3-step system lets you go from curly to straight and then bounce right back to your natural curls. The Bounce Back Formula preps, protects and seals your hair so your hair will return to its natural curly texture after one wash. *2013 Motions Hair Care Survey conducted by Kelton

Motions® sent me a sneak peek at their latest innovation in haircare along with some major tips to impart on this here blog. The new Straight Finish™ Heat Styled System offers women with natural curls the option to straighten their without losing them forever. So rejoice my natural chicas! You no longer have to worry about compromising your texture.

The Straight Finish™ Cleanser ($6.99) gently cleanses, softens and is formulated with a blend of Shea Butter, Soy Bean Oil and Keratin Protein. The cleanser was pretty rich and lathered up quickly. Next up is the Leave-In Conditioner ($6.99) which I loved and applied right before blow drying. Since my hair is short, I had my stylist use a small amount concentrating on areas with new growth. Blow drying was a breeze and the Sealer ($6.99) was applied to the completely dry hair. The result was super shiny hair with actual body. Typically when I get my hair done, it looks a bit dry and I’m faced with the problem of whether or not I should apply MORE product. Luckily I didn’t face this with the Straight Finish™ line and the best part was my hair was still shiny and bouncy a full 24 hours after the wash and set.

good things come in small packages…

Slap on the word “mini” to a beauty product and I’m guaranteed to love it. I love the potability of said mini product (especially now that I’ve started working out, I want items that won’t take up too much space in my bag). Not to mention minis are cute.

Lavanila - the purveyor of healthy and organic beauty products - has introduced a new travel sized version of their best-selling Healthy Deodorant (currently available in Vanilla Lavender).

The Lavanila Healthy Deodorant is a natural deodorant that is said to deliver odor protection and vitamin-rich nourishment without the use of commonly feared harsh chemicals. Freshly scented with Lavanila’s signature essential oil blends, the Healthy Deodorant uses a breakthrough, clinical strength formula that’s as safe as it is effective. I’ve always wanted to try Lavanila’s Healthy Deodorant but $18 seemed to be a bit too steep (even for me!), but at $10 the mini is right up my alley. It comes in the brand’s signature scents, and are of course made with 100% natural and organic ingredients.

The travel size ($10) is available now Lavanila.com and Sephora.

WIN IT! From now until Tuesday 1/24 TWO lucky winners will have the chance to win one FULL SIZED version of Lavanila’s Healthy Deodorant (pictured above). Simply leave a comment below or shoot me an email to [email protected]. The contest ends at Tuesday 1/24. Please, only one entry per person; duplicate entries will not increase your chances of winning. Contest is open to U.S. readers only.

{high shine + a giveaway}

Friday, January 13, 2012

This year I, like most red-blooded Americans, resolved to go to the gym (though for me it was more of a fitness thing than losing weight). I feel like the process of getting ready for this newfound love of fitness was WAY better than the actual gym experience. I have no problem shopping for workout gear (heyyy Lululemon and Lady Foot Locker!) but the actual work out process doesn’t jive well. One Tuesday evening Zumba class later, my hair went from fabulously straight to uber ‘fro and massive curl. Not the look I was going for in the new year. It was something out of a horror show as I mercilessly tried to tame my hair in the women’s locker room.

Diamond Luster Anti-Frizz Curl ‘N Shape Gel by Smooth ‘N Shine

All week I’ve been gripping on to my sample of Diamond Luster Anti-Frizz Glisten Conditioning Gel by Smooth ‘N Shine ($2.99). After the Gym Horror of (early) 2012, this conditioning gel has been a lifesaver considering that it’s not like the gels of yore. There’s no crunch or flakiness and it keeps my unruly hair down without hardening. Super brushable (hoorah!), I’m able to switch up my style throughout the day easily and without fear of retaliation. Isn’t that the greatest?

Enriched With-
• Anti-Frizz Polymers help to tame and smooth the surface of the hair.
• Panthenyl ethyl ether a conditioning, anti-frizz agent.
• Quartz Crystals offer heat protection, shine and dimension to dull hair.

The Diamond Luster Anti Frizz Glistening Conditioning Gel is available at Drugstore.com, Target and beauty stores nationwide.

GIVEAWAY ALERT: Three lucky winners now have the chance to win one for themselves. Simply leave a comment below or shoot me an email to [email protected]. The contest ends at Thursday, January 19th. Please, only one entry per person; duplicate entries will not increase your chances of winning. Contest is open to U.S. readers only.

Add Some Sparkle (plus a GIVEAWAY!)

Friday, December 9, 2011

If there’s one thing I love it’s anything bedazzled and/ or sparkly. If it’s shiny, I want it in my possession. Considering you read this blog, I figure you might be interested in the same. Right?!

Well, when I heard that Chris March - the Project Runway alum turned costume designer and star of Bravo’s “Mad Fashion” - has collaborated with Vaseline® to design limited-edition bejeweled Vaseline® Lip Therapy® Original jars I KNEW I had to let YOU know. Remember when I declared my love of Vaseline a while ago? This is TEN TIMES BETTER! March customized the mini jars with nearly $50 of Swarovski crystals. It’s nothing groundbreaking or even revolutionary but it’s something I think everyone needs. ADD SOME SPARKLE TO YOUR LIFE FRIENDS!

A few questions did arise from my last post about Vaseline’s Lip Therapy mini jars so allow me to clarify the difference, mmkay? Both Lip Therapy Original and Vaseline Petroleum Jelly are made of 100% pure petroleum jelly BUT the difference is that Lip Therapy Original is made of a different type of petroleum jelly. This petroleum jelly was chosen specifically for this product to deliver high levels of moisture to the lips and not melt if carried in a pocket or purse.

Realizing the need for mini bedazzled jars in your lifestyle, Vaseline will be giving away 100 custom jars on 12/19 (starting at pm ET/5pm PT) as part of a one day, flash giveaway on www.VaselineLipTherapy.com. BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

One lucky MissWYA reader will be able to get her (his? are there guys reading this blog?) on a jar of their own just by entering here! To enter, shoot me an email to [email protected] and tell how do you add sparkle in your life? The subject line of your email should read “Chris March & Vaseline.” The contest ends at 11pm (EST) on Wednesday, December 14th. On Friday, December 16th, I’ll be announcing the winner. Please, only one entry per person; duplicate entries will not increase your chances of winning. Contest is open to U.S. readers only.

The standard jars are available at Wal-Mart and Target (SRP $1.99) this holiday season.

Carol’s Daughter Monoi Review + GIVEAWAY!

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

As someone who is desperately nursing her hair back to health, I’m way more aware of what goes on my hair on a daily basis. In the past, I was quite likely to pick up just about any shampoo/conditioner combo and slather it all over my hair without a doubt. When my hair would break, I simply blamed the fact that I chemically relaxed my hair. I mean, that’s totally normal right? It’s expected!

WRONG!

Chemically relaxed, natural, curly, wavy, straight — DOESN’T MATTER! Healthy hair is healthy hair no matter how you put it. Not only was I dealing with breakage, there’s the ever present dry scalp/ dandruff issue, a very embarrassing but realistic fact.

Deciding that enough was enough, I started paying attention to what I purchased, reviewed and kept in my bathroom. I had three simple goals when I decided to take care of my hair:

1. Stop the breakage
2. GROW my hair out (I have a personal goal of having my hair reach the middle of my back…no easy feat.)
3. Cut the dandruff

When Carol’s Daughter announced their Monoi collection (read here for more), I was intrigued. Carol’s Daughter is all about promoting healthy hair so what not try it out? Using the Monoi Oil, the product of a sacred Polynesian ritual over 2,000 years old, Carol’s Daughter created this three-step hair system focusing on getting hair healthy and maintaining it.

How does it work?
Monoi oil strengthens and repairs fine, delicate, heat or chemically-treated hair. In other words, they created this JUST FOR ME :) While the line is said to be clinically-proven to help revive hair and reverse damage after only one use, I didn’t see a MAJOR difference until about the second use.

la pièce de résistance
After using the full line for about a month, I’ve developed a lovely relationship with the Monoi Repairing Conditioner ($20) and the Repairing Hair Mask ($28).

The Repairing Conditioner is an antioxidant-rich formula that penetrates hair with a natural blend of Bamboo Water, Panthenol, and UV Protectors. The Repairing Hair Mask not only smells yummy but contains a blend of nourishing extracts, butters and oils that envelops hair and works! Once it’s rinsed out my hair was noticeable shinier (again detangling was ahh-maze). One of my biggest fears is detangling my hair post shampoo. Holy hell my hair knots and tangles quicker than anyone I’ve ever known. And when the roots grow in…giirrrll it is NOT pretty. Detangling was a BREEZE after using the conditioner + mask combo. I was amazed (so was my hair stylist haha). All while leaving your hair smelling unbelievably good.

Would I recommend this line to anyone? YOU BET. Hell I’m recommending it to EVERYONE!

Here’s the fun part
Because I love this, Carol’s Daughter has graciously agreed to host a giveaway…YEAH! Two winners will receive the Monoi Repairing Hair Mask. To enter, shoot me an email to [email protected] and tell why you think you need this bad boy. The subject line of your email should read “Carol’s Daughter Giveaway.” The contest ends at 11pm (EST) on Tuesday, July 19th. On Thursday, July 21st, I’ll be announcing the winner. Please, only one entry per person; duplicate entries will not increase your chances of winning. Contest is open to U.S. readers only.

Can’t wait for the giveaway to end? Carol’s Daughter Monoi Repairing Collection is available at Sephora, carolsdaughter.com and at Carol’s Daughter Stores.
