Dermalogica

updated skincare routine

Tuesday, November 19, 2013

For the past two months my skin decided to join the rebellion and go nutso without my consent. Between breakouts galore, dull skin, and an overall blegh look I was not in my element at all since I typically pride myself on the care I take of my skin. Alas I allowed myself to sleep in makeup and stay up way to late coupled by the fact that I practically ran out of all of my holy grail skincare products and relied on testing new products (not ideal). After noticing that my makeup just wasn’t doing it for me anymore, I knew I had to whip it back into shape. I’m a firm believer that your makeup can only do so much and if your skin isn’t on point, your makeup won’t be either.

And so began the updated skincare routine you see below.

skincare

Morning:
Dermalogica breakout clearing foaming wash ($19): yes, the Clear Start line by Dermalogica is geared towards teens and no, I don’t care. Since its main role is to wash away dead skin cells, dirt and excess oils that clog pores and cause breakouts I figured why not give it a go. It contains salicylic acid (known to clear skin), 8 botanicals including Tea Tree and Lavender (soothes skin), and Orange Peel extract (revives skin) this is gentle enough to use every morning.

Olay Fresh Effect {Bright On Schedule!} Eye Awakening Cream ($13) this isn’t pictured as it’ll be available in January 2014 but I just received a sample of this and I fell for the tri-rollerball applicator that cools and massages my gentle under eye area.

Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica Lightweight Cream ($60): this is nothing new but after trying other moisturizers for day I had to go back. Lately moisturizers have been leaving my skin feeling tight and dry but not this. With ingredients like vitamin E and squalane, my skin is left feeling hydrated and supple. It’s honestly a great moisturizer to use underneath makeup because it’s not greasy so nothing is sliding off.

Hampton Sun Continuous Mist Sunscreen SPF 55 ($32): I received samples of Hampton Sun products over the summer but was too stubborn to let go of my Kiehl’s Activator Sun Protector Sunscreen to try anything new. Well, after finding sample packets of a few of the brand’s items I decided to go ahead and order a full sized product to layer over my Rosa Arctica cream. What I love most is that it offers oil-free broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and doesn’t make my skin feel heavy or greasy. I simply spray it over my face and rub it in to make sure the product is evenly distributed. Sounds like a lot, but I swear it isn’t. This stuff is gold.

Evening
As part of the whole time-to-show-my-skin-who’s-boss project I went out and bought the Murad Acne Complex® Kit ($60) after having a TERRIBLE reaction to the Clinique Acne set (it literally burned me and I had scabs around my eye area…never again!). The Murad kit is pricey but worth it in my opinion because I’ve already fallen for the Clarifying Cleanser ($26 if purchased outside of the set) and Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel ($54). You can already see the value as the treatment gel alone costs nearly as much as the entire set. Though the cleanser left my skin a little bit dry, my skin simply looked better after one use. The breakouts were calmed and I’m now in week two of use. The Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel is good for controlling and preventing breakouts so I’ve been applying right before bed only. I do use the Skin Perfecting Lotion (not pictured) but only every other night as it doesn’t really moisturize as much as I’d like.

Moroccanoil Pure Argan Oil ($50; launching on moroccanoil.com soon!): absolutely no secret that I’m obsessed with argan oil so when we came out with this product I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. It’s non-greasy, contains vitamin E and essential fatty acids, and absorbs pretty quickly into skin. I use it prior to bed because I wake up with soft as a baby’s butt skin.

Disclosure: samples were provided for editorial consideration. Also, I work in digital for Moroccanoil.

because sometimes your beauty sleep needs a bit of help: dermalogica overnight repair serum

Monday, October 3, 2011

friends, it’s been all systems go since I came back from Haiti. the month I spent away was a huge problemo (although enjoyable) since exactly one month later I was scheduled to take the LSAT. talk about stress! I spent every waking moment possible preparing for the one exam I’m convinced was created to make people feel bad about their level of intelligence. while working full time.

my poor skin does what it tends to do in times of high stress — act a fool. not only was I cranky because of the test, work, mi madre (god bless her soul) but my skin is now dull, breaking out and dry.

last week, I visited Dermalogica‘s SoHo location for a quickie to learn about their new Overnight Repair Serum ($60). it’s like they thought of me because the Overnight Repair Serum (minus the price tag) promises to help increase luminosity while minimizing fine lines (not quite there yet), loss of elasticity (ditto) and dryness (this is an issue).

the bigger question is…how?! well, this little serum syncs up with your body’s nighttime recovery process. everyone knows that sleep is the body’s natural beauty treatment. Sleep is the time the body to repair itself (learn more here). there will be times, however, when sleeping is not enough. part of Dermalogica’s AGE Smart system, the serum contains - among other ingredients - argan oil, vitamin E and essential fatty acids that help in the restoration of a weakened harrier layer and lock in moisture.

I haven’t used this yet but now that the test is over (thank the LORD!) I need some tender love and care so you KNOW I’ll be all over this. Also, Dermalogica’s resident skin care expert, Annet King, provided an acupressure guide — again, HOW DID THEY KNOW I NEEDED THIS?! find said guide below (for full blown acupuncture, go see a specialist folks. I’m no doctor).

Start by pressing 4-6 drops of Overnight Repair Serum onto the skin and smooth outward with light finger strokes.

acupoint 1: Press on the temples (the depression between the hairline and eyebrow) with the middle fingers. This helps with headaches and relaxation.
acupoint 2: Press underneath the eye on top of the cheek bone (approximately one inch under the eyes). This helps improve eye clarity.
acupoint 3: Press on the inner eye sockets (the corner of the eyes). This helps relieve sinus pressure, headaches, pain and swelling around the eye area.
acupoint 4: Press inside the eye socket bone under the brow (find the small indentation in the upper orbit). Helps relieve headaches and sinus pressure.
acupoint 5: Press on the middle of the forehead between the eyebrows (third eye). This helps calm the mind.
acupoint 6: Press on the corners of the mouth. This helps rejuvenate the face and tone facial muscles.
acupoint 7: Press on the center of the crease between the end of the nose and the top of the lip. This helps calm the spirit.
acupoint 8: Press on the center of the crease between the lower lip and the chin. This helps with hormonal balance

Beauty on the Go: 3 Brands That’s Got You Covered!

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

As you’re reading this, I’ll be on a plane making my way to Haiti. While I’m thrilled to have a week and a half where I’m legit off the grid, packing was one hell of a hassle. What do I take? What CAN I take without TSA getting a five finger discount on me? Luckily there are brands that think about these things so you don’t have to. Check it out:

1. Supergoop Weekend Essentials Tote
Whether you need TSA approved sunscreens for your carry-on or just something small enough to keep your bag light for a weekend getaway, Supergoop’s Weekend Essentials Tote seriously helps a sista out in need!

This bright, travel-friendly terry-cloth tote is packed with everything you’ll need to stay safe during your end-of-summer retreat:
- SPF 30+ Sunscreen Swipes: Ideal sun protection on the go for both face & body, these paraben-free, water-resistant swipes deliver powerful UV protection.
- SPF 30+ Everyday UV Lotion: A perennial favorite, this lightweight, water-resistant sunscreen lotion mist for face and body is great for all skin types.
- SPF 30+ MintFusion Lip Balm: With an atypically high SPF, this lip balm protects, soothes, and hydrates stressed-out lips with its super-antioxidant and regenerative formulation. The glossy formula adds a great shine over lip color, too!
- SPF 30+ UVA/UVB Sunstick: A super easy-to-apply sunscreen stick that protects small spots (especially the eye area, lips, nose, earlobes and hands, not to mention scars) from aging and burning UVA and UVB rays.

$39.50 at Sephora.com and Supergoop.com

2. M·A·C Sized To Go
A collection released by M·A·C not too long ago, these little guys are gifts of wonder!

M·A·C now allows you to carry on all of your favorite regime: Fix +, Cleanse Off Oil, Cleanse Off Oil/Tranquil, Pro Eye Makeup Remover, Demi-Wipes, Studio Moisture Cream, Strobe Cream, Green Gel Cleanser and Oil Control Lotion – everything you need to keep your skin cleansed, refreshed and hydrated. Each item is sold separately but if you had to pick only ONE item, make it the makeup wipes. You. Will. Not. Regret. It.

Prices start at $10. Check out maccosmetics.com for the full collection.

3. Dermalogica Daily Defense Kit

I’ve actually been cheating and using the Dermalogica Daily Defense Kit ($20) this whole summer (which leads to me slightly panic since I’m out of body block). The kit includes the brand’s Daily Defense Multivitamin Body Block SPF 20, the SPF 30 Solar Defense Booster, Solar Shield Lip Balm, and the After Sun Repair (a gel moisturizer that can help calm irritated skin). The Solar Shield Lip Balm has permanent residence in my handbags since I use it as a balm for my lips and other random areas.

Happy travels!

This Spring, Join FITE

Sunday, April 24, 2011

Several weeks ago (try a month ago), I attended a press event held by esteemed skincare brand ‎Dermalogica in celebration of their commitment to Financial Independence Through Entrepreneurship (FITE). FITE is a global empowerment platform powered by Dermalogica founder Jane Warwund and Kiva.org, the nonprofit leader in microfinance.

Jane Warwund, founder of Dermalogica and FITE

The goal
Just as their name suggests: to provide women entrepreneurs access to small loans that will help them start or grow a business; and to help educate the public at large about the benefits of empowering women entrepreneurs.

How can you help?
With every purchase of a FITE-sleeved Dermalogica product, you will receive a code. Visit joinFITE.org to redeem your code and Dermalogica will donate a $1 microloan - on your behalf - to a female entrepreneur in the country of your choice. After a few weeks, you’ll receive information about the entrepreneur who is benefiting from your action.

Please don’t forget that you can still help the people of Haiti, donate to the Red Cross today. Thank you.

When you’re good, you’re good…

Tuesday, December 8, 2009

I knew I was onto something last year when I proclaimed my love for Dermalogica skincare products (I think I cried a little when I finished my Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 30 lotion in May). Turns out I’m not alone because two stars from “New Moon” are also feelin’ the love.

As you can imagine, trying to be a vampire is no joke! All of that makeup can do some damage on the skin (hello clogged pores!) Unfortunately real vampires don’t perspire, don’t grow facial hair, don’t get lines & don’t get BLEMISHES! Lucky bastards.

Norma Hill-Patton, Makeup Designer for Twilight: New Moon, tells us that Dermalogica’s Active Moist, which was used on most of the cast, was key since it is universal & suits most types of skin. According to Norma:

“The Pre Cleanse was invaluable for cleansing off the body make up, especially because we had to apply a make up fixative & it was difficult to remove. But we didn’t want anything that was harsh or might induce a reaction.”

And with all of that squinting R. Patz does homeboy needs to make sure that he wards off fine lines (so Dermalogica’s Intensive Eye Cream came in handy). The teensiest amount was patted under the eye for “final checks” (on top of the make up) and diminished the lines for close ups ;)

“And finally,” Norma tells us, “the Shaving Regime was used on all of the guys with great success! Again, it was really important to be sympathetic to their skins as they had to have a REALLY CLOSE shave. I’m a great fan of the shaving oil and it can be used for ‘wet’ shaves or electric shaves! We even had to shave some of them in the middle of the day to maintain the smooth look to their skin!” She also loves the Renewal Lip Complex to keep their lips smooth during the cold days of filming.

Ashley Greene’s product of choice

Turns out Norma isn’t the only Dermalogica fan, Alice Cullen (that’s Ashely Greene for you non Twi-hards) says, “My daily makeup regime includes Dermalogica sunscreen. They also have a really great “special clearing booster” for spot treatment on blemishes. It’s a little more involved on set with hot towel treatments and Dermalogica pre-cleanse to get all that white makeup off. We use a lot Dermalogica products…I love the Microfoliant!”

So there you have it. Even vampires know that you have to take care of the skin before looking good with the make up :)
