new (to me) beauty products

Monday, April 1, 2013

oh, hello. As much as I like to think I’m up on the latest beauty breakthroughs and releases, sometimes a gal falls behind. Here are a few goodies that I’ve been obsessing over the past few weeks…

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder, $45
Hourglass is one of those brands that quietly slipped into my radar because of the crazy intense (and pigmented) lip lacquers and, yes, their prices. They recently released the Ambient Lighting Powder, a universal finishing powder that features state-of-the-art technology to recreate the most exquisitely flattering types of light. Sounds amazing, right? There are six different shades that uses photoluminescent technology to filter out harsh light and refine the appearance of the complexion. The shade I’m most obsessed with is Radiant Light, a sun-kissed golden beige hue.

BECCA Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector™, $36
I’m never one to apply primer because it’s just on extra thing to add to my beauty routine BUT at the same time I’m always looking for something to stop the oil production factory that is my face. When a sample of BECCA’s new silicone-free primer finally came in the post, I applied without regret since it instantly mattified my face (although it left a slight tint). Foundation went on without a hitch and there wasn’t an issue with color at all. My face was left looking matte all day and I didn’t have any makeup sliding off of my face. For those of you who have avoided primer in the past, this is definitely in my top three and it doesn’t contain silicone, oil, alcohol, and fragrance.

Make It Rich Lip Color Crayon, $11
Not new to MissWYA but I felt it necessary to mention this lip pencil again because of how amazing it is. I’ve been rotating between shades but Peony has quickly become my go-to. It glides on and doesn’t feather or travel across my face. I apply and forget it - all I could ever want. It isn’t the shade I’m wearing in the photo above but if you follow me on Instagram, you’re guaranteed to catch a selfie one of these days.

I received samples gratis but I wouldn’t recommend anything if I didn’t truly love it.

a day in the life of: mary friberg, public relations director at hourglass cosmetics

Sunday, February 10, 2013

Being the nosey voyeur that I am, I reached out to a few of my favorite people in the business to share what they’re jam packed days are like - and what better week to kick it off than fashion week! Over the next couple of days, I’ll be harassing my friends and colleagues to give an inside glimpse into what makes shows (hair, beauty, etc.) actually happen. Is it all champagne and glamour? Let’s find out…

First up is Mary Friberg (pictured below in the pink top!) who is the Public Relations Director at Hourglass Cosmetics. I’m not sure HOW I met Mary but I do know that I completely APPRECIATE her in my lifestyle since she keeps me updated on all things Hourglass. The brand has quickly become a regular in my makeup bag and their Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipsticks have CHANGED my life and I have her to thank for it. Expect a few more reviews (especially on their new Ambient Lighting Powder) here on MissWYA. In the meantime, take a look at the power machine that is Mary as she walks us through Day 1 of NYFW:

Next time I complain about being too busy, I’ll think of the day she had. Thanks Mary for sharing!!

mercedes-benz fashion week beauty: Imitation of Christ ss2013

Thursday, September 13, 2012

Backstage at Imitation of Christ was definitely an experience. For the presentation itself, designer Tara Subkoff opted for an installation with real women of all ages instead of your typical fashion models. Visitors were first greeted with a chorus singing Carol of the Bells with new lyrics about the modern-day obsession with cosmetic surgery.

Backstage makeup artist Robin Black for Hourglass Cosmetics started with Hourglass No. 28 Primer Serum to create a seamless canvas for makeup and treat the skin with an infusion of essential oils. Next she applied Hourglass Illusion Tinted Moisturizer the brand’s # 2 Foundation brush, for a glowing complexion. Any imperfections or dark circles were covered with Hidden Corrective Concealer. On the cheeks, she contoured and highlighted with Illume Crème-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Bronze Light as well as Aura Sheer Cheek Stain in Flush to the apples of the cheeks and blend with the fingers.

For the eye look, she applied the shimmering shell shade from Hourglass’ Vol. 6 Eye Shadow Palette all over the lid and the bone white shade (found in the same palette) on the inner corners of the eyes. Hourglass Film Noir Kohl Eye Pencil (launching October 2012) in Espresso was applied from the outer corners of the bottom lash line to just short of the inner corner and smudged using the Hourglass #11 brush. Lastly, she applied two coats of Hourglass Film Noir Full Spectrum Mascara on the top and bottom lashes. Brows were kept full and natural with the new Hourglass Arch Sculpting Brow Pencil (launching October 2012) in Soft Brunette.

The most exciting part of the look was the lips - an Amanda Lepore-esque look created with the new (and totally amazing!) Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick.

Nails, created by the maestros over at CND, were created “blown glass nails” designed to “accentuate the woman’s form” so a few were shaped like sharp stilettos. Layering CND’s Copper Pearl and Putty nail colors, they simply dropped the colors and pulled them up to create the swirl pattern you see in the photo above. Nails were finished off with Air Dry Top Coat.
