“I was inspired by the fashion, fads, and art of the 1950s,” nail guru Jin Soon Choi told me referencing abstract expressionist art movement known as Color Field.
Inspired by the artists of the period, Jin named her collection Color Field - a collection filled with bright, solid-toned colors that were youthful without being too trendy or young, “I like colors that anybody can wear - young or old.”
Each polish ($18) was named by her friends - who just so happened to be models- and delivers rich color that her line has come to be known for and give a playful nod to the ’50s.
Cherry Berry is a ripe berry tone named by Ashleigh Good
Kookie White is an off-white bites with a hint of grey and blue, named by Catherine McNeil
Cool Blue is a classic cerulean blue named by Mirte Maas. It’s the shade in wearing in the picture above and I’m absolutely smitten by it
Pop Orange is a bright, energetic orange named by Edie Campbell. It’s definitely going to be my new summer color!
Dolly Pink is a retro blush pink named by Amanda Murphy and is the ultimate feminine pink
Of course you can’t have a 50s themed collection without polka dots so she created to toppings to be layered over polishes or worn alone. Polka White (on my accent finger) and Polka Black both have flecks in varying sizes to give your nails a fun accent.
The JINsoon Color Field collection launches in March at Jin Soon locations as well as select Space NK, Sephora and Barneys NY locations.
Disclosure: I attended a press event and received a manicure as well as samples from the collection.
Sometimes, it’s the little things that go a long way. Case in point: last week was über stressful with Sandy, losing power, and trying to make sure I was still able to work from home. In order to have a brief moment of sanity, I took one hour out of my day to completely disconnect and focus on absolutely nothing - no worrying was allowed, no texting, just me time. Naturally, I went to my beauty stash and pulled out nail polish since it’s the one time I can be relaxed and do something enjoyable.
The polishes are from Julep’s Maven program where I had chosen the IT Girl intro box. Julep products are pretty neat in that they’re 4-free, high quality, and have great color options. The Maven program is a subscription service that sends members new nail polishes (and other beauty freebies like foot cream, designs, etc.) every month for $19.99.
The polishes have pretty good consistency (I noticed that the red seems to be thinner than the green) but it isn’t horrible. Two coats and you’re good which was awesome.
For the giveaway, one (1) lucky gal will receive a free Intro Box (subject to US and Canadian residents only). To enter, tell me which intro box you would like from the options below (bonus points by entering via the rafflecopter widget below!). Contest ends next Wednesday, 11/14/12.
Determined to take over the world (as if they haven’t already), M·A·C Cosmetics has introduced their first permanent Nail Lacquer collection, containing 31 colours and 3 finishes.
While the brand has always has always released nail polishes, this collection goes above and beyond, adding in a few of our favorite shades (hello Girl About Town) as well as the trendier shades (dark, poppy-inspired, glittery, and neutral). With this collection, there’s a shade for every mood.
What if you’d like to kick it up a notch? Try using M·A·C’s infamous pigements and glitters that not only work well for eyes, but can be mixed with gel to create wicked color combinations. To get a few tips on how to best handle the loose pigments, I’ve reached out to M·A·C Senior Artist, Keri Blair, to give us the scoop!
MisWYA: Pigments can be a bit messy — what would be your number one tip for those who are new to using it and may be scared of spilling it all over the place? Keri: At a first glance pigments can be a bit daunting, but the payoff is more than worth the few extra steps. Here are some to help keep those loose bits in order.
Don’t throw out the little plastic insert. The plastic lid keeps the pigments from leaking out around the edges of the cap, making it easier to transport, especially if you are a girl on the go like me.
Pour out a small amount using a metal spatula or the back of a brush onto a small palette, dish or tissue. (A little goes a long way)
If you are using it on the eyes, prep the eyes with MAC Cosmetics Eye Kohl or Paint Pot so the pigments have something to stick to. Use a flat brush and run the bristles through your finger tips before loading the brush with pigment. The oils from your fingers will help hold the pigment on the brush.
If you are using it for nail art, use a small piece of foil (3×3 square) as your palette, and use a tooth pick or spatula to pour out a small amount before mixing with clear polish or gel.
MissWYA: Do you have a favorite pigment color or (cool combo for nail designs)? Keri: Hands down my favorite pigment is M·A·C Cosmetics Frozen White. I use it every day to highlight the inner corners of my eyes. I also adore pink pearl! For nails, I am obsessed with a mixture of M·A·C Pro Deep Purple and M·A·C Cosmetics Frozen White or M·A·C Pro Deep Blue Green. Most of all I just love the unique and customized colors you can create utilizing this flexible medium!

I can’t stop thinking about M·A·C’s Hey Sailor collection and so, with my weekly manicure appointent coming up (diva!), I’m thinking of getting a wee bit patriotic. I’ve been stuck in an orange and pink rut as of late so this is a nice bit of change.
M·A·C’s polishes have been hit or miss in the past but in recent months it’s been more hit meaning there aren’t any streaks and it dries super quickly (holla at Seche Vite™!)
M·A·C’s Hey Sailor collection is available now in stores and online.
my favorite local NYC spa, Haven Spa, have added a new pedicure service for the warmer weather, sweetly called The Pediterranean. Inspired by the summertime in Sicily, this seasonal treatment kicks off with a scented foot bath infused with orange, lemon and tomato notes that’s then polished and buffed with a salt scrub and nourishing oil blend. To complete the experience, a luxurious shea and cocoa body butter infused with the delicate scents of Neroli, Bergamot, and Citrus is applied. While receiving the Pediterranean, you get to select from six colors from Dolce & Gabbana’s spring/summer 2012 nail polish collection as that, too, was inspired by southern Italy and the passion of the Mediterranean.
All of this is done, mind you, while you sip on a complimentary cup of iced grapefruit soda that contains a hint of Solerno Blood Orange Liquor. Yum!
Haven Spa is located at 150 Mercer St. between Houston and Prince in NYC.
