misswya interviews: the ffs

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

A month or two ago I was introduced to a brand called The FFS created by sisters Cheryl Freeman and Donna Freeman Hughes. The duo hit a major coup when their line of bracelets got picked up by Barneys and they were featured on the retailer’s blog, The Window. The Freeman sisters handcraft their accessories line with the finest materials (think: recycled vintage vulcanite and oxidized Ethiopian copper) while making sure it’s true to their streetwise yet sophisticated aesthetic.

I had the opportunity to e-chat with them on their brand, accessories, and career. Read on for more:
Miss Whoever You Are: What inspired you to become accessories designers? Did you always know that was the career for you?
The FFS: The love of antique beads and loving to work with our hands. We knew that a creative and artistic career was optimum We are self taught with classes and workshops sprinkled through the years. After many years of different careers, we decided to concentrate on building a line.

MissWYA: How would you describe your personal style?
The FFS: Original….mixing vintage, tribal and modern. Our clothes are canvases for our accessories. Comfort is very important!

MissWYA: What is the design process like?
The FFS: Skype, a lot of texted photos! We improve and finish each others work.

(beaded bracelet in the center by The FFS courtesy of the brand)
MissWYA: What’s the biggest challenge you face as a new brand?
The FFS: The jewelry business is very competitive so the right exposure is very important.

MissWYA: What keeps you inspired? Any muses?
The FFS: New material we get from our African bead dealers, artist that are uncompromising in their expression. Grace Jones, David Bowie.

MissWYA: What is the best advice you’ve received and from whom?
The FFS: From mom. “Always follow your intuition.”

MissWYA: If I were to raid your iPod, what would be on your playlist(s)?
The FFS: Fela Kuti, Roy Ayers, Osulande, Eryka Badu, The Clash, The Stooges

MissWYA: Any advice for aspiring designers?
The FFS: Stay true to your vision and keep on truckin’!

MissWYA: What’s the one piece of jewelry you grab before leaving the house?
The FFS: Bracelets and watch

Quick! Tell me the first thing that comes to mind:
My heart beats for
POSITIVE CHANGE
Fashion shouldn’t be FORCED
If I wasn’t an accessories designer, I would be a(n) WORLD TRAVELERS
Twitter or Facebook or Instagram? INSTAGRAM
Biggest mistake you see women make when it comes to getting dressed DRESSING FOR OTHER PEOPLE AND NOT THEMSELVES

Thank you to The FFS for chatting. To see their line, visit The FFS online store or shop at Barneys.com.

statement piece

If there’s one thing I love it’s gifts that give back. I know a few people who have issue with the consumerism mentality of the holiday season knowing that there are others who cannot indulge and don’t have the means to feed their children or send them to school, let alone buy lavish gifts. Now, I’m not saying shopping is bad (c’mon) but it doesn’t hurt to be aware. That said, gifts that not only fill your shopping desire but also helps others are simply the best. This holiday season, jewelry designer Catherine M. Zadeh designed a limited-edition bracelet collection for Restoration Hardware titled “Words to Live By” benefiting the children’s charity, Kid’s Wish Network.

Since 1997 Kids Wish Network has been dedicated in helping to improve the quality of life for children who are experiencing life-altering situations.

The collection features hand-woven bracelets in different colors, with a few having sterling silver plaques hand-etched with words of inspiration, including Believe, Hope, and Carpe Diem.

It’s available now at Restoration Hardware, starting at $95.

On the Lookout: Ariel Gordon at Lucky Shops NYC

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

I’m all about finding designers that new to the scene AND create great pieces without sacrificing style.

LA-based jewelry designer Ariel Gordon Maffei launched her collection in 2009 and this year, she’ll be at Lucky Shops New York. PR gal turned jewelry designer, her work is inspired by “travel, blue skies, bright colors and the inherent beauty of her raw materials.” Learn a bit more about her, her work and where to dine post shopping haze :)

Handmade Initial Necklaces in silver & 14k with diamonds; Retail price: $115-$395; Lucky Shops Price: $65-$235

What do you think your most-wanted piece at Lucky Shops will be?
I’m bringing the pinky ring back with my love knot rings!

What’s your color palette this season?
Classic gold with pops of bright color.

Where’s your go-to spot for post-Lucky Shops nibbles and cocktails?
Eataly!! It will be just around the corner from LSNY.

Assorted Silk Friendship Bracelets; Retail Price: $108-$115; Lucky Breaks Price: $40-$45 *Lucky Breaks- Designers will deeply discount one select item from their boutique while supplies last*
Love Knot Ring in silver & 14k; Retail Price: $75-$175; Lucky Shops Price: $45-$100

What’s the inspiration behind your latest collection?
I strive to design jewelry for people like me… girls who don’t change their jewelry everyday or with every outfit. In these economic times a woman requires more versatility from her jewelry - a necklace has to work both when she goes out on a date Friday night and when she’s at the Farmers Market on Sunday morning. I design pieces that can transition well and be wardrobe staples.

Hello stunner…

Should all reason leave my senses for one moment, I’d be off to get this beautiful Giles & Brother Gold Metal Knot Cuff ($175). Gorgeous in its simplicity, why not reward myself with something so delicate.

This heavy metal cuff is composed of a tube shape of gold metal topped with a gold metal knot. It is quite narrow and fits wrists up to 6″. In gold.
